Italian Music

storia italia in musica

The course History of Italy through Music provides a series of lessons in which the history of Italy will be presented through songs.

The Italian tradition of songwriting has given us songs whose lyrics are poetic. Our singers were fine and delicate and the artists wrote songs that reflect significant events of our history.

Italian Music was born to sing of love. During the Second World War, soldiers at the front and the women waiting for the return of sons and husbands, began to write songs that dealt with themes of longing, of exile and suffering from the forced separations. Subsequently, the songs reflect the trauma of emigration of millions of Italians forced to leave their country to seek employment.

The great singer-songwriters in the '60s have composed songs inspired not only by love but also by issues of national interest. The course provides an overview of artists such as Luigi Tenco, Bruno Lauzi, Fabrizio De Andrè, Francesco De Gregori, Antonello Vendetti, Rino Gaetano etc, who sang of Italy's economic boom, immigration and the 'Italy that works, Italy who falls in love' as the singer De Gregori sang.

For each song teachers will provide an artist biography and an analysis of the historical, political and social environment in which songs were born. During the course audio-visual equipment (video or live concert) will be used.
