City of Salerno
Salerno is a real Italian City, where foreign people experience the real Southern Italian life. Here life is very easy, people are friendly and take care of each other. With a thriving main street, the city gives people "the small town feeling".
Restaurants, "pizzerie", pubs, shops, beaches are reachable within a short, enjoyable walk. You will never feel like a tourist amongst thousands of other tourists like in cities such as Florence or Rome. You will soon become one of us, and at the end of your journey it will be really difficult to leave.
Location
Salerno is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy and, together with its vast province, offers a large number of attractions. In fact, the city has kept intact over the years its rich historical centre and its characteristic architecture.
Even though it is one of the most ancient sites of Southern Italy, Salerno is also a modern city, set on a coastline that spans from Positano to the Cilento forrest, it is a center from which sea-towns, beaches and marine grottos are easily reached.
The beauty of the countryside and the numerous archaeological sites along the coast, which dates back to 1900 BC, frame a locality ideal for an unforgettable stay.
Tradition and History
A city with a great historical and cultural tradition dating back to Roman times, it reached its maximum splendour in the XI and XII centuries when it was the seat of the famous Salerno School of Medicine.
Today Salerno still preserves intact its historical centre, the Norman cathedral dedicated to its Patron Saint Mathew, Prince Arechi's castle which seems to date back to the castrum Salerni of Roman times, and many other monuments which are all important examples of a rich historical tradition.
Every Friday of March the ancient Crucifixion Fair (Fiera del Crocifisso) is brought back to life following an ancient legend that goes back to the year 1000 AD. In the same period, the council initiative of Open Doors at Salerno (Salerno porte aperte), which is regularly promoted throughout the year, offers the possibility of visiting all the museums and monuments of the city free of charge.
Movida
According to many magazines, in the last years Salerno has became one of the best places to live for young people.
Salerno is really unique because of a phenomenon that has been going on for the past 15 years: The MOVIDA.
The nightlife is incredible. Every hour of the day you will find people gathering outside pubs and bars to meet friends and join the Italian way.
Culture and Folk Festivals
Throughout the year folk festivals testify to the vitality and enterprise of the Salerno people and their love for the ancient traditions of their region.
The Salerno summer offers a host of dates not to be missed: patron saint festivals following religious rites but even more tied to the secular folk culture; town festivals and "sagre" which promote typical gastronomic products of Salerno; music festivals, the most important of which is held in Ravello in the splendid surroundings of "Villa Rufolo"; and theatre and ballet at the "Arena del mare" situated on the beach in front of the city or in the "Teatro dei Barbuti" in the heart of the historical centre.
The beginning of the winter season coincides with the opening of the "Teatro municipale Giuseppe Verdi" which welcomes famous theatrical companies and well-known actors. The Salerno Cinema Festival is also held here and is now at its 55rd edition, second only to the famous children's cinema manifestation: The Giffoni Film Festival.
